Choose a case size
Short-story collections reset the setting and evidence with every case, making them useful for interrupted schedules. A mystery novel offers more room for atmosphere, competing explanations and social context.
Notice the narrator’s distance
A companion narrator may admire the detective while misunderstanding the method. A suspect or witness may tell the story under pressure. The distance between observation and explanation is part of the puzzle.
Read period evidence carefully
Older mysteries may rely on medical, racial or social assumptions that are inaccurate or harmful. Treat those assumptions as historical features of the text, not as reliable investigative knowledge.
